"Gentle Adieu" - Escape to Exile II

Johannes Brahms wrote his clarinet works in the late fall of his life after meeting Richard Mühlfeld. The pieces seem - in the composer's words - like a "loving farewell to the world". In addition to the poignant Trio in A minor, which Brahms wrote in 1891 in the spa town of Bad Ischl during the last heyday of the almost thousand-year-old empire, Andreas Ottensamer, Sol Gabetta and Dejan Lazić's program focuses on the perennially topical subject of exile and the challenges of the unexpected. Exile is reflected in solo works by Béla Bartók and Mieczysław Weinberg, two composers from Eastern Europe who were ravaged by the dark storms of history in the 20th century. The surprise comes in the form of the clarinet trio by the Italian Nino Rota, who is better known as a composer of film music - especially for Federico Fellini - but who unfolds here in the intimate world of chamber music.
