The two banks

The string quartet is the showpiece discipline of occidental composition. Any self-respecting composer writes his most important works for this instrumentation, which has been perceived as particularly "German" since Joseph Haydn, although it also has Mediterranean roots. This also applies to Greece and Italy, which in many respects differ musically from these Central European customs. But what does it look like on the other side of the sea? The composer and oud virtuoso Nehad El Sayed, who is rooted in Egyptian-Islamic culture, comments on these pieces on his instrument; a world premiere brings together these very different sound cultures.
