CAMERATA BERN - Transfigured Night

A couple out for a walk at night. The woman's confession, the man forgives, and both are absorbed in the transfiguration of their love. This is how Richard Dehmel's poem Verklärte Nacht could be summarized. Arnold Schönberg's string sextet of the same name follows the emotional course of Dehmel's lines exactly. His late Romantic composition is also a precise portrait of an entire era characterized by shame, but also by the capacity for deep love.

Karl Amadeus Hartmann wrote his violin concerto Concerto funebre in 1939 as a reaction to the break-up of Czechoslovakia and the subsequent annexation of parts of the country by Nazi Germany. In his composition, Hartmann contrasts what he called the "hopelessness for the spiritual" of the time with two chorales as beacons of hope. The exceptional violinist Alina Ibragimova completes her first program for CAMERATA BERN with excerpts from Johann Sebastian Bach's The Art of Fugue.
