Zurich Baroque - Inmo Yang

From the 2025/26 season, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra is looking forward to a further collaboration with Zurich Opera House as part of the new Zurich Baroque format series. The Zurich Opera House's new festival celebrates baroque music over ten days with operas, concerts, chamber music, family concerts and performances. One of the concerts will be performed by the Zurich Chamber Orchestra in the ZKO House at Tiefenbrunnen. Together with the South Korean violinist Inmo Yang, the chamber orchestra will present a virtuoso, late baroque program that revolves around the French violinist and composer Jean-Marie Leclair, but also sheds light on his role models and inspirations.

Jean-Marie Leclair, who is best known today for his violin compositions, first made a career as a dancer. In France, dance has been an essential part of cultural life at least since Louis XIV. Leclair first danced in Lyon and later went to Italy as a ballet master, where he quickly came into contact with the violin school there. His teachers and sources of inspiration were Pietro Locatelli and later Giovanni Battista Somis. The latter was in turn a pupil of Arcangelo Corelli. Leclair quickly made a name for himself not only as a violinist, but also as a composer. Contemporaries said that Leclair played with control and precision rather than being an exuberant virtuoso. He was soon regarded as one of the best violinists in France and was even nicknamed le Corelly de la France, the French Corelli.
