St. John Passion
The St. John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the most important works of church music. Here, Bach sets the Passion of Jesus Christ to music based on the Gospel of John. He impressively combines biblical texts with free chorales and arias. The Evangelist - tenor Jan Petryka - leads through the story as the musical narrator, while the choir brings the story to life in changing roles - as the crowd, high priest, disciples or believing congregation. The chorales are particularly moving as they speak directly to the listener and invite them to empathize. The arias of the soloists offer space for inner contemplation, tonal beauty and deep spirituality, while the role of Jesus - sung by bass Yannick Debus - is characterized by a special musical calm and dignity and thus clearly stands out from the dramatic events.
