Beethoven and Schubert with Rachel Harnisch
The program includes the first act of Beethoven's ballet music "The Creatures of Prometheus" and the concert aria "Ah! Perfido". Schubert's art songs will be performed in orchestral versions, including "Gretchen am Spinnrade" and "Erlkönig". The orchestrations are by Johannes Brahms, Max Reger and Hector Berlioz. Such arrangements were popular with 19th century composers. They transformed the original intimate medium of the piano song into public concert music. The thematic concept spans an arc from the ancient heroism of Prometheus to the romantic inwardness of Schubert's songs.
The soloist is the soprano Rachel Harnisch. She has made guest appearances at leading opera houses worldwide and worked with Claudio Abbado. Lieder recitals are particularly close to her heart. Performers and audience alike can look forward to her interpretation of the vocal parts in this concert.
