went beyond music. What they both have in common is that they give us a glimpse of the infinite from an infinitely distant time. These mystics are echoed in the work of the Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina, whose thinking in mathematical proportions is directly linked to the medieval idea of music of the spheres and yet brings with it a contemporary emotional urgency.
