Zoltán Despond & Vesselin Stanev play masterpieces for cello and piano

Three geniuses, three epochs, a cello and a piano in a fascinating dialog of sound. Experience an evening full of contrasts, intimacy and virtuoso brilliance.

When cellist Zoltán Despond and pianist Vesselin Stanev take to the stage together, two instruments merge into a narrative unit. In their current program, the two exceptional artists present a gripping dialogue between tradition and new beginnings that exploits the entire emotional range of chamber music.

The concert opens with Ludwig van Beethoven's Sonata in D major, a visionary late work that points far into the future with its monumental fugue and places the highest demands on the performers. In the «Three Romances» and the famous «Adagio and Allegro» by Robert Schumann, the entire poetry of Romanticism unfolds - sometimes dreamy and profound, sometimes stormy and characterized by unbridled passion. The Sonata in F major by Richard Strauss forms the glittering climax. This youthful masterpiece is bursting with energy and already hints at the orchestral brilliance and melodic generosity for which Strauss later became world-famous.
