New section: Music education in Switzerland
Individual lessons, choirs, support for gifted students, vocational training - music education is broadly based in Switzerland. The Swiss Association of Music Schools (VMS) and the Conference of Swiss Music Universities (KMHS) are now presenting players and target groups under the joint label „Music Education in Switzerland“.
The Swiss Association of Music Schools (VMS) is the umbrella organization of local and regional Swiss music schools and their cantonal and intercantonal associations. It represents the approximately 360 music schools integrated into the cantonal associations. The seven recognized music schools in Switzerland have joined forces in the KMHS.
In 2026, the new section will focus on the different age groups that benefit from music education in Switzerland - from toddlers to senior citizens. The current issue focuses on the very youngest. How do professional first encounters with music develop for pre-school children? What role do parents play? At which institutions can music teachers qualify for this important professional field? Editor Anicia Kohler spoke to experts and parents, and Dr. Mary Brice reports on the pedagogical content of training at the Haute école de musique de Genève (HEM).
