The Nutcracker Meets the Saxophone
With Asya Fateyeva, we’ll ring in the New Year alongside an artist who continually pushes the boundaries of her instrument through innovative programs, artistic boldness, and an unmistakable timbre. In Alexander Glazunov’s Saxophone Concerto, she will showcase the warm tone and technical mastery that make her playing so unique. Glasunov—a compatriot and contemporary of Sergei Prokofiev—treated the saxophone, then still a relatively new instrument rooted in jazz and military music, not much differently from the more conventional solo instruments of a concerto in the finest late-Romantic style: sonorous, melodious, and virtuosic. The concert evening opens with sparkling colors thanks to Swiss harpist Tjasha Gafner, who performs Germaine Tailleferre’s *Concertino*—a true gem of the repertoire for her instrument. Prokofiev’s *Symphonie classique* brings a sense of lightness and wit, before Asya Fatayeva, together with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, sends the audience off into the New Year with an exceptionally original, jazzy arrangement of Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky, and sends them off into the New Year in high spirits.
