Julia Hagen
Classical Horizons: From Haydn to Beethoven
This program spans the spectrum from the gallant, refined splendor of the early Classical period to the radical musical language of Beethoven’s late works. As if we were on a musical journey through time, we can trace how personal expression and individual voice emerge with ever-greater clarity from the early Haydn to the late Beethoven. The overture to the opera *L’amant anonyme* by Mozart’s dazzling contemporary Joseph Bologne kicks things off and sets the stage for cellist Julia Hagen to perform Joseph Haydn’s Concerto in C major —a work that, with its brilliant tone and alternation between solos and orchestral ritornellos, initially exudes the spirit of the late Baroque, ultimately culminating in virtuoso boldness in the finale. If that isn’t the perfect setting for Julia Hagen to showcase the «naturalness, warmth, vitality, and willingness to take risks» of her playing in the most beautiful way. Ludwig van Beethoven’s last string quartet, Op. 135—composed while he was almost completely deaf—brings the program to a close: within the expanded sonic space of the string orchestra, it is able to unfold its intimate power even more poignantly.
