Music education for children

How do you get children excited about the fascinating world of classical music? At our family concerts, it’s mainly parents or grandparents who introduce their children to this world. But how can children whose families have never been to a concert gain access to it? This is where schools can play a role. At the Junge ZKO, we collaborate with the Office for School Culture to give two school classes the opportunity to explore the world of classical music through an orchestra over the course of two years. This includes a behind-the-scenes look at how an orchestra operates, with the chance for direct interaction between the children and the musicians.

Mutual visits take place regularly and are encouraged—whether in the classroom, the concert hall, or the ZKO building. The “visiting morning” is particularly appreciated; during this event, students get to know both the orchestra and its administrative processes through an exciting scavenger hunt. The highlight of the Young ZKO is the final concert, which is conceived by the children themselves. With the support of music educator Evamaria Felder, theater educator Laurin Moor, and composer Stefan Koch, the children write the text, design the stage set, and even compose their own pieces of music. At the end of the season, they take the stage at the ZKO House alongside the Zurich Chamber Orchestra to celebrate the grand finale of an inspiring and intensive collaboration.
