Alena Baeva

Romantic Musical Worlds for Violin

Violinist Alena Baeva is said to possess a «magnetic presence» on stage and a passionate musical curiosity—just a few of the qualities that have helped her earn a reputation as a fascinating and versatile soloist on stages around the world in recent years.

Before she takes the stage as a soloist twice in this program, we’ll dive into a sensually warm summer night with Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck—truly welcome at this time of year and between two works from the far north! But the two spirited and playful Humoresques for violin and orchestra by Finland’s national composer, Jean Sibelius, prove that his music is anything but cool. Before Alena Baeva, following these virtuosic flights of fancy, takes on the Violin Concerto in D minor by the then 13-year-old Felix Mendelssohn—a work that unfolds a tempestuous, romantic urge for expression within a classical framework— the Zurich Chamber Orchestra will perform the expressive and melodically rich string quartet by Fanny Hensel—Felix Mendelssohn’s older sister and lifelong close musical confidante—composed twelve years later.
