Bach Ensemble Lucerne: Frank Martin - Viola d'amore - Bach

This year, the Bach Ensemble Lucerne is devoting itself not only to J.S. Bach but also to the Swiss composer Frank Martin, the fiftieth anniversary of whose death was in 2024. In his Sonata da chiesa, the baroque viola d'amore is heard in a delightful combination with a modern work from the 20th century.
Frank Martin's Mass for double choir is one of the most popular works of contemporary choral music! Although it was composed around one hundred years ago, this impressive work was only premiered forty years later. The Credo can be heard in the concert.
The concert ends with one of J.S. Bach's most famous cantatas: "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme". This cantata is based on the chorale of the same name by Philipp Nicolai from 1599 and is probably best known for the fourth movement, which Bach himself included in his collection of "Schübler Choräle" and which was often arranged for other instruments.
