CAMERATA BERN - Divertimento!
Arthur Lourié, still one of the great unknowns of the 20th century, wrote his Concerto da Camera in exile in the USA in the middle of the Second World War. The six short movements combine neo-baroque gestures with the playful elements of the post-serial music of the Soviet Union of the 1980s in a visionary way.
Artistic partner Patricia Kopatchinskaja contributes a new composition to the concert. Her Danses Macabres gnash their teeth. You can hear the skeletons rattling and the laughing death has put on a rigid mask: macabre dances for a macabre time. Sándor Veress' arrangement of Zoltán Kodály's Marosszék Dances contrasts this with a vitality, albeit tinged with melancholy.
Béla Bartók's Divertimento is the music of a relaxing summer in the Swiss chalet of his patron Paul Sacher. There is a lot of lively dance music in it, with Hungarian, Romanian and Viennese echoes. Only the middle section, a funeral march, reflects on the downside of such exuberance.
