CAMERATA BERN - Ne me quitte pas
As an unhappy lover, Jacques Brel pleaded in one of his most famous chansons: "Ne me quitte pas". Now Swedish composer Britta Byström, who is well versed in the genre of orchestral music, has taken this Brel hit as the basis for a concerto for trumpet and strings. The idea was born in Bern, where the work will also be premiered. The idea came from the trumpeter Jeroen Berwaerts, who, like Brel, comes from Belgium and is known for his versatility and commitment to contemporary music. The world premiere of Byström will be followed by a Suite tragique compiled by Berwaerts with Brel chansons and dance movements by Jean-Philippe Rameau, with Berwaerts taking on the vocal part as the chansonnier.
Baroque and neoclassical music meet in the first part of the concert: with a trumpet concerto by Tommaso Albinoni, and with Arthur Honegger's deeply sad 2nd Symphony from 1941, a reflection of the composer on the Second World War. Towards the very end, the trumpet lends this work a hopeful glimmer with a chorale melody.
