CAMERATA BERN - Once Upon a Time
Violist Lawrence Power presents his debut program for CAMERATA BERN as a "musical stream of consciousness". As a great story in two parts, told with the means of music. Part one leads from the tragic fate of the Carthaginian queen Dido in Henry Purcell's work to the Celtic songs in a viola concerto by Sally Beamish and Gertrude Stein's surrealistic memories of the "once round" world in John Cage's Living Room Music to a farewell greeting from Peter Maxwell Davies to a fishing village on the Scottish Orkney Islands.
Once again, the journey in part two begins in Baroque England: with Matthew Locke's music to William Shakespeare's play The Tempest. Driven by such storms, the journey continues via Elizabeth Maconchy's masterfully polyphonic Allegro to the (as yet) unknown shores of a new viola concerto by Irish violist and composer Garth Knox, inspired by a seafaring ballad.
