Claire Huangci & Thomas Dausgaard
Piano virtuosity and symphonic depth
As a celebrated virtuoso and artistic authority, Clara Schumann shaped the musical world of the century like almost no other woman of her time. With the Piano Concerto in A minor, which she composed for her own performances at the age of just 14, she created a work of great technical difficulty and distinctive Romantic verve. Pianist Claire Huangci makes her debut with the ZKO, performing this impressive artistic statement of self-assertion. She will also perform the Variations on «La ci darem la mano,» an early virtuoso piece by Frédéric Chopin based on the famous duet from *Don Giovanni*. The program begins with Mozart and his Haffner Symphony—a work as gripping as it is radiant—and concludes with Ludwig van Beethoven, who died 200 years ago: His Symphony No. 2 already impressed his contemporaries with its “depth, power, and artistic erudition” and has lost none of its musical persuasiveness to this day. At the podium, we welcome Danish conductor Thomas Dausgaard, who has been among the world’s leading conductors for decades.
