Concert – To Die of Love
Stravinsky gives a heart to a simple piece of wood; his name is Petrouchka. He loves Ballerina, she rejects him, he dies—and his death moves us, because we know he existed. What remains is his fractured identity, that of a being halfway between an object and a conscious being. At what point does a puppet cease to be a puppet?
Just as Petrouchka moved from sawdust toward humanity, Romeo and Juliet move from flesh to myth. All that remains of the two lovers are their passions, expressed through sound; yet the ballet, stripped of dance, still recalls the pulsation of their bodies.
With the help of the HEM students, a group of musicians pays tribute to these passionate, departed souls: «Oh là là, what splendid loves I have dreamed of.».
