Cultures of Tolerance

The Sarband ensemble is a legend. This collective, led by Vladimir Ivanoff, has made a name for itself internationally through its fusion of Arabic, Christian and Jewish musical traditions into a unique, comprehensive musical style. The concert leads from el-Andalus, Arab Spain, via the Cantigas de Santa Maria to the court music of the Turkish Ottomans, which was also written by Jewish composers. The concert is a sonorous vision of the peaceful and inspiring coexistence of cultures and the three Mediterranean religions.

In an afternoon lecture at the Joachim Raff Archive, musicologist Dr. Sara Beimdieke will discuss how the emerging cultural phenomenon of Orientalism in the 19th century served as a stage for social discourse on topics such as nation or religion.
