Daniel Hope Presents Bach and His Contemporaries
Music Director Daniel Hope and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra present a true concertante medley in this festive concert marking the beginning of Advent. It was Arcangelo Corelli who established a fixed form for the interplay between a small group of soloists and the full orchestra, and who, with these concerti grossi, went down in music history as one of the founding fathers of the Baroque instrumental concerto. The concluding pastorale of his most famous concerto grosso bears the inscription «fatto per la notte di Natale»—written for Christmas Eve—and exudes a peaceful calm with its lulling rhythm. In the D minor concerto for two violins and cello from Antonio Vivaldi’s groundbreaking collection *L’Estro Armonico*, a moment of pastoral contemplation can also be found in the graceful *Siciliano*, nestled between the virtuosic dialogues in the outer movements. The work impressed even Johann Sebastian Bach so much that he rearranged it into an organ concerto. The evening concludes with a solo concerto by the Baroque master: his Violin Concerto in A minor, BWV 1041, one of the finest achievements of the Italian concerto tradition.
