The spirit over the waters
From Gregorian chant to choral works from the Reformation, the Berner and Zürcher Kantorei with their conductor Johannes Günther span an arc to the radiant double-choir motet "Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf" by J. S. Bach. The highlight of this year's summer concert program on the theme of "Water and Spirit" is the "Flood" by Willy Burkhard: the famous Bernese composer, whose 125th birthday will be commemorated in 2025, recounts the dramatic events of the great flood in five impressive choral tableaux and gives a comforting account of God's new covenant with mankind. Our "house organist" Christian Barthen complements the a cappella works with Burkhard's touching partita "Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten" and Bach's famous, rarely heard "Präludium und Fuge A-Dur BWV 536".
