Fazıl Say

Fazıl Say plays Shostakovich

Almost a quarter of a century lies between the composition of Shostakovich's first and second piano concertos. The composer's life situation, which is reflected in the two works, could hardly be more different: While the C minor concerto, composed in 1933, was written during a period of musical awakening, the F major concerto, written in 1957, four years after Stalin's death, was born into the dark period of communist cultural repression. The second piano concerto, a birthday present for Shostakovich's son Maxim, is an astonishingly light-hearted piece given the darkness of the time. In this concert project, pianist and composer Fazıl Say not only takes a look at the great piano literature, but also presents a piece from his own pen with his work Leopard.
