flaming earth
In times of global crises - from war to climate change - how do we find the courage to stand up for a future worth living?
At the heart of the new project by vokal:orgel in cooperation with Theater Basel is the cantata "Herr, deine Erde brennt!" by Latvian composer and organist Lūcija Garūta from 1943 - a powerful appeal for freedom, fraternity and peace. In "flammende erde", 180 young people pose the question of how we can live with our earth and develop visions for a sustainable future. Their voices merge with those of professional musicians and the magnificent music hall organ to create a gripping, semi-staged concert experience.
The program is complemented by Ēriks Ešenvalds' (*1977) poetic settings of Nordic legends and a colourful madrigal by Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643), the expressive work "Fire" by Katerina Gimon (*1993) and an atmospheric commissioned work by composer Lucia Birzer (*1995).
