Gabriela Montero & Simon Höfele
A Whirling Play of Colors for Piano and Trumpet
The gifted pianist and improviser Gabriela Montero returns to the Zurich Chamber Orchestra following her thrilling performance of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 about two years ago. Shostakovich himself viewed this work—composed in 1933 during a period of artistic freedom before the grueling scrutiny of censorship in later years—as a «mocking challenge» to the traditional solo concerto. A glance at the instrumentation makes this clear. Shostakovich pairs the solo piano with a trumpet that also takes on a solo role—performed in this program by Simon Höfele. And then there’s the music: an entertaining—in the best sense of the word—and at times breakneck game of wits, full of quotations, humorous allusions, and surprising twists. This original stroke of genius is preceded by the fleeting, playful miniatures *Visions fugitives* by Sergei Prokofiev—originally written for piano—as well as two warmly illuminated reflections on nature by Leoš Janáček and the British late-Romantic composer Ruth Gipps.
