Haydn's "Creation" with the Lucerne City Orchestra
On May 25, 2025, the oratorio "The Creation" by Austrian composer Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) will be performed in the concert hall of the KKL Lucerne. The powerful work, which lasts around three quarters of an hour, tells the story of the creation of the world based on the biblical book of Genesis. Under the overall direction of Manuel Oswald, the Lucerne City Orchestra will once again tackle a central work of classical music. It is supported by two choirs: the Zug chamber choir cantori contenti (conductor: Davide Fior) and Der Chor, Luzern (conductor: Daniela Portmann). The vocal soloists are Ulla Westvik (soprano), Jakob Pilgrim (tenor) and Matthias Helm (bass). They represent three archangels who narrate the six days of creation.
In Haydn's "Creation", a world characterized by the elements of fire, water, earth and air gradually develops from the primordial chaos with great tonal power. The sound of the wind, the pattering of raindrops, the soft falling of snowflakes, but also the roaring of lions, the trampling of elephants and the chirping of birds can be heard. Each day of creation is celebrated with a monumental choral passage.
