...in tempi di guerra
The Mediterranean is - especially now - a region of conflict in which beauty and horror, poetry and sadness, humor and tragedy live side by side. The title of an engraving by Francisco Goya, which served as inspiration for Enrique Granados (himself a victim of the sea), sums this up: "el amor y la muerte". Maurice Ravel's "Gaspard de la nuit", one of the vir- tuoso highlights of piano literature, demonstrates this particularly impressively: the suggestive Undine is followed by "le gibet", the gallows, and the bizarre goblin Scarbo. The actor Morad Badrah, who came to Switzerland as a refugee from Syria and shares his emigration experience with the Jewish composer Erich Itor Kahn, reads poems by Adunis, the most important contemporary Syrian poet.
