Maximilian Hornung
Cello sounds in the mirror of Mozart and Schoeck
For the first time, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra meets the gifted cellist Maximilian Hornung, who has established himself as one of the leading cellists of his generation in recent years with his warm-hearted and technically perfect playing. Together they will perform the Cello Concerto, op. 61, written in 1947 by the Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck. The composer, who was born in Brunnen on Lake Lucerne in 1886 and died in Zurich in 1957, focused on song and opera. However, there are also important works in the instrumental field. His cello concerto certainly has a vocal quality. There are also numerous echoes of Schoeck's more recent song cycles.
Together with Mozart's very little Nachtmusik, newly discovered in 2024, Arnold Schoenberg's late Romantic work Verklärte Nacht and the Elegy by Boulanger pupil Elliott Carter, this promises to be a particularly sensual and intoxicating concert evening.
