New Year's concert with Thomas Hampson & Daniel Hope

Between voice and strings

To mark the festive New Year, American baritone Thomas Hampson and Music Director Daniel Hope present a glittering concert featuring great American composers such as Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Harold Arlen and Kurt Weill. They all shaped and enriched American musical culture with their incomparable compositions, in which they combined the classical music tradition with influences from jazz, blues and film music.

Florence Price, born in Little Rock in 1887, was an African-American composer who also incorporated African-American elements into her compositions. Grammy Award winner Jesse Montgomery, born in New York in 1981, interweaves classical music with elements of folk music, poetry and social consciousness in her works. She is regarded as an astute interpreter of the American sound of the 21st century, whose works have been hailed by the Washington Post as "turbulent, wild, colorful and bursting with life".
