Russian life in exile - Inner Emigration VII

The penultimate weekend of the festival starts with an all-Russian evening - but it is a Russia viewed from abroad. Ten years after the premiere of his Second Symphony (performed here by Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich), Sergei Rachmaninov is forced into exile by the increasing effects of the revolution - he will leave his homeland and never return there again. Dmitri Shostakovich, on the other hand, remained in the Soviet Union and led a silent, inner resistance, the so-called "inner exile". Instead of leaving the country, he defied the communist dictatorship through his music, which often - as even the censorship authorities recognized - spoke between the lines.
