Elias Grandy takes over the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra

Elias Grandy is to become the new Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra (PRSO). He succeeds Petr Popelka, who has led the orchestra since 2022.

Born in Munich to German-Japanese parents, he studied cello, music theory and chamber music in Basel and Munich before studying conducting at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin. He began his career as Kapellmeister at the Staatstheater Darmstadt; in 2015 he was awarded a prize at the Sir Georg Solti International Conducting Competition. He has been Chief Conductor of the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra since 2025, after eight years as General Music Director of the Heidelberg Theater and Orchestra.

Founded in 1952, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra is one of the most important orchestras in the Czech Republic. Based in the capital, it offers subscription concerts at venues such as the Dvořák Hall of the Rudolfinum, the Smetana Hall in the Prague Municipal House and the
Bethlehem Chapel. Recordings by the orchestra have won Gramophone Awards and the Anděl Award.
