Schmidt Wins the Basel Sinfonietta Competition
Paul Taro Schmidt won the Basel Sinfonietta composition competition. He impressed the judges with his blend of contemporary music, electronic music, and pop culture.
Mit seinem Sieg beim Kompositionswettbewerb erhält Schmidt ein Preisgeld von 5000 Franken sowie den Auftrag, ein neues, rund zehnminütiges Werk für die Basel Sinfonietta zu komponieren. Die Uraufführung findet am 19. September 2027 im Rahmen des Saisoneröffnungskonzerts 2027/28 im Stadtcasino Basel statt.
Paul Taro Schmidt erlangte an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK) den Bachelor und Master in Komposition für Film, Theater und Medien und unterrichtet heute im gleichnamigen Major das Fach Studio-Praxis. Derzeit studiert er zudem im Z-Kubator Compass sowie Composition and Electronic Music am Royal Conservatory of The Hague.
Founded in 1980, the Basel Sinfonietta is a Basel-based orchestra with a symphonic lineup that specializes in contemporary music. Titus Engel is the principal conductor. The orchestra has commissioned numerous works and, since its founding, has presented more than 250 world premieres and national premieres.
