He has portrayed Maria Beth\u00e2nia, Nana Caymmi and Martinho da Vila and in doing so - as in his excellent feature about the otherwise camera-shy pianist Martha Argerich - created an unaffected, intimate closeness to these protagonists that contributes greatly to the understanding of their music. It is precisely this strength that he can use in the film <em>Where are you Jo\u00e3o Gilberto?<\/em> cannot play out. This is partly due to the concept of the film itself, but also to the rather dubious artistic significance of the singer who is the subject of the search.<\/p>\n<p>Gachot enth\u00e4lt dem Publikum Gilberto, der sich bewusst vor der \u00d6ffentlichkeit versteckt, mehrfach vor. Zum einen n\u00e4hert er sich ihm bloss indirekt, indem er die Suche eines andern nacherz\u00e4hlt: Der verstorbene deutsche Journalist Marc Fischer war mit einem Versuch gescheitert, dem Bossa-Nova-Pionier nahezukommen, und hatte dar\u00fcber ein Buch geschrieben. Der Film zeichnet denn auch nach, wie Gachot Fischers Recherchen nachzuvollziehen versucht, womit bereits zwei Abwesende den direkten Zugang zum Ph\u00e4nomen Gilberto versperren. Hinzu kommt eigentlich noch eine dritte: Gilbertos Tochter Bebel, die w\u00e4hrend der Dreharbeiten offenbar Kontakt mit ihrem Vater hatte, aber ebenfalls Phantom bleibt.<\/p>\n<p>So muss man \u00fcber lange Strecken bloss Reisebanalit\u00e4ten mitverfolgen, Telefonate, die zu nichts f\u00fchren, Gespr\u00e4che, die keine Resultate zeitigen, auch mit Gilbertos Ex-Frau Mi\u00facha. Ein wenig \u2013 zu wenig \u2013 erf\u00e4hrt man \u00fcber die Bossa-Nova-Kultur aus episodischen Begegnungen mit Gr\u00f6ssen des Stils, vor allem Marcos Valle und Roberto Menescal, in denen dann auch mal \u2013 ebenfalls zu wenig \u2013 von der Musik selber die Rede ist.<\/p>\n<p>Man n\u00e4hme dies alles in Kauf, h\u00e4tte Jo\u00e3o Gilbertos Versteckspiel tats\u00e4chlich eine tieferliegende \u00e4sthetische Bedeutung, die Licht auf eine h\u00f6chst fruchtbare Epoche der brasilianischen Musikgeschichte werfen w\u00fcrde. Nun gilt Jo\u00e3o Gilberto zwar als einer der V\u00e4ter des Bossa Nova. Entscheidend gepr\u00e4gt wurde der Stil hingegen von andern. Darunter finden sich zahlreiche weitere, vor allem Tom Jobim und Vinicius de Moraes sowie etwa Marcos Valle, Roberto Menescal, Carlos Lyra oder Edu Lobo. Im heutigen Brasilien selber, wagen wir zu behaupten, wird Jo\u00e3o Gilberto keineswegs die Verehrung entgegengebracht, die er beim in die Jahre gekommenen bildungsb\u00fcrgerlichen europ\u00e4ischen Jazz- und Weltmusik-Publikum geniesst. Den meisten Brasilianern d\u00fcrfte es herzlich egal sein, wo und weshalb er sich in Rio mutmasslich in einem Hotelzimmer verkriecht.<\/p>\n<p>This search for Gilberto is particularly irritating in view of Brazil's current highly explosive political and artistic situation, and seems like a kind of denial of reality: While everything seems to be going downhill in the country, Gachot bites into an irrelevant side aspect of a golden era of M\u00fasica Popular Brasileira that has long since passed. <em>Where are you Jo\u00e3o Gilberto?<\/em> becomes a well-made, at times atmospheric nostalgia flick - but with the wrong theme at the wrong time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gachotfilms.com\/films-posts\/where-are-you-joao-gilberto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Link to further information<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Georges Gachot's documentary about the Brazilian bossa nova singer Gilberto is a well-made nostalgia film.
