The foundation views the award as a significant recognition of its long-term project, which it has been pursuing since 2006 and which involves performing and documenting the complete vocal works of Johann Sebastian Bach.<\/p>\n

The City of Leipzig\u2019s Bach Medal is awarded for outstanding contributions to the work of Johann Sebastian Bach and is considered one of the most prestigious honors in the field of Bach studies. The jury consists of the Gewandhaus Kapellmeister, the rector of the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University of Music and Theater in Leipzig, the Thomaskantor, the president, and the director of the Bach Archive. They explained their decision in favor of the J. S. Bach Foundation as follows:<\/p>\n

\u00abSince 2006, the J. S. Bach Foundation St. Gallen has been pursuing the ambitious project of performing the complete vocal works of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685\u20131750) in monthly concerts. For twenty years, the Foundation\u2019s choir and orchestra, under the direction of Rudolf Lutz, have set the highest artistic standards. Sponsored by entrepreneur Dr. Konrad Hummler, Bach\u2019s work\u2014along with accompanying introductions and reflections on the text and music of each piece performed, as well as the release of the concerts on video and CD\u2014has been and continues to be brought to a wide audience in an innovative and sustainable way.\u00bb<\/p>\n
