This year's symposium focuses on the hand\u2014a body part that is of great significance to most female musicians, yet complex and multifaceted for medical professionals.<\/p>\n
How is it possible\u2014and, above all, how does it remain possible\u2014for fingers to fly across the piano keys at top speed, for the correct position on a string to be found with precision, or for a drummer to reach speeds of up to several thousand beats per minute with his drumsticks?<\/p>\n
Ingrid Hauser, concert pianist and music educator, explores this question in her presentation and workshop titled \u00abApproaching the Instrument with Finger Sensitivity\u2014What Exactly Is Fine Motor Skills?\u00bb Leonhard K\u00f6nigseder, a musician, sports psychologist, and educator, reveals in his presentation and workshop why our hands tremble or don\u2019t always do what we want them to or what we\u2019ve practiced. What solutions are available?<\/p>\n
Dystonia researcher Dr. J. Doll-Lee, M.D., will discuss the latest findings on the causes and prevention of focal dystonia\u2014a nightmare for many musicians\u2014via Zoom. The renowned and experienced hand surgeon and music physician, Prof. J. Blum, will share insights from his many years of challenging work with musicians\u2019 hands.<\/p>\n
Rounding out the program\u2014but no less important\u2014are presentations by Oliver Margulies of Handlabor ZHdK (\u201c100 Hand Characteristics\u2014Practical Application\u201d) and by music therapists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists (\u201cInstrument Modifications, Hand Therapy\u201d).
