Carlo Mathieu, the new Executive Secretary of the SMV, brings excellent qualifications to his new role. Although not a professional musician himself, music has been a constant presence in his life. His professional interests include, in particular, labor and social security law, union work, vocational and adult education, as well as the leadership and development of associations and organizations. The intersection of these topics also shapes his current work at the Swiss Musicians\u2019 Association.<\/p>\n

In addition to his professional work, Carlo Mathieu is also active in politics. He serves on the executive board of the SP Kriens. His political priorities include good working conditions, social security, equal opportunities, social solidarity, and the sustainable and livable development of the town of Kriens. Respect, social justice, and equal opportunities for all people are central to his political philosophy.<\/p>\n

Carlo Mathieu was born in Italy and spent his childhood in Naples, where he attended the Swiss School. Today, the father of two lives with his family in the Lucerne region. Before joining the SMV, he served as executive director of the SP Canton of Aargau, union secretary at the VPOD, and held various positions within the labor movement for several years. In these roles, he gained extensive experience in advising employees, negotiating with social partners, advocating for political interests, and leading nonprofit organizations.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You come from the labor union movement. In what ways does the SMV differ from other labor unions?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The SMV is not only part of the Swiss labor movement but also part of Swiss and international culture. This dual role demonstrates that advocating for the interests of professional musicians goes beyond legal and political representation. Our work also includes raising awareness among society and the government about the concerns of the professional music sector. It is also important to note that musicians\u00ab working conditions differ significantly in some respects from those in other industries. Irregular working hours, a considerable amount of individual preparation time, high artistic quality standards, and particular physical and mental stresses characterize their daily professional lives. This justifies industry-specific regulations that take into account the unique characteristics of professional music-making. The income of many professional musicians also depends on the extent to which the public and the government understand that creating music is, in fact, \u00bbwork\u201d and must be compensated financially accordingly.<\/p>\n

The SMV is a well-established union. How can it continue to grow?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I get the impression that, thanks to the dedication of many volunteer members, the SMV is well-established in the music scene and that numerous musicians appreciate its work. The SMV must definitely build on this and strengthen its presence both in other regions and among freelance musicians. I also see potential to further increase the SMV\u2019s visibility among the general public and among young musicians.<\/p>\n

What will be the biggest challenges for musicians in Switzerland in the coming decades?<\/strong><\/p>\n

In my view, professional musicians in Switzerland are at a turning point today. In addition to rising costs of living and often precarious forms of employment, digitalization, streaming, and artificial intelligence are changing the conditions of the profession. The key challenge in the coming years will be to ensure good working conditions, reliable social security, and fair compensation. At the same time, we must reach new audiences and highlight the social significance of music and culture.<\/p>\n

I am convinced that the future of professional music in Switzerland can be secured if artists, institutions, employers, and policymakers work together to find sustainable solutions and continue to recognize and promote the cultural value of musical work.<\/p>\n

What role does music play in your life?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Music has played an important role in my life since childhood. Classical music was a constant presence in our home, as my parents were passionate piano players. In addition, several professional musicians were part of my family\u2019s circle of friends, so I was exposed to that world from an early age. As a child and teenager, I played the trumpet and bass tuba for several years. At some point, however, I stopped playing, and other interests took precedence. My enthusiasm for music, though, has remained.<\/p>\n

Today, I would definitely describe myself as a \u00abmusic junkie.\u00bb My musical tastes are wide-ranging, spanning from classical music to jazz and singer-songwriters to punk rock. I especially enjoy discovering new artists and genres. Whenever possible, I love going to live concerts. Experiencing music firsthand and together with other people has a special intensity and authenticity for me that no recording can fully replace. That\u2019s why good live music remains one of my favorite cultural experiences to this day.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
