Innanzitutto Manfred, divorato da un amore colpevole: quello per Astarte, sua sorella. Muore di orgoglio, senza cercare la redenzione; le sue ultime parole lo rivelano chiaramente: \u00abVecchio! Non \u00e8 poi cos\u00ec difficile morire\u2018. Segue poi il compositore Elgar, avvolto dalla penombra, che attraverso la sua partitura affida al violoncello di Maximilian Hornung un addio sussurrato ai confini dell\u2019ignoto.
