Il fatto che abbia preso lezioni di violino anche da Wenzel Krumpholz (1750-1817), nato in Boemia e cresciuto a Parigi, si sarebbe perso nel vortice della storia se non fosse stato per Ferdinand Ries nelle sue Note biografiche (1838): <em>\"Beethoven prendeva ancora lezioni di violino da Krumpholz a Vienna, e all'inizio, quando io ero<\/em> ancora <em>a volte suonavamo le sue sonate insieme al violino. Ma era una musica davvero terribile, perch\u00e9 nel suo fervore entusiasta non sentiva quando metteva un passaggio nell'applicatura in modo sbagliato\".<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Chiss\u00e0 se Beethoven era a suo agio con lo stesso fuoco sulla viola, che suonava nell'orchestra di corte di Bonn all'et\u00e0 di 18 anni? In ogni caso, il suo \"Dienstbratsche\" \u00e8 sopravvissuto fino ad oggi. A parte il ruolo naturale dello strumento nell'orchestra o in formazioni cameristiche come il quartetto d'archi e il trio d'archi, Beethoven (come quasi tutti i suoi contemporanei) non compose per\u00f2 un'opera completa in cui la viola fosse obbligata. Anche il singolare Notturno op. 42 (per pianoforte e viola) \u00e8 solo un arrangiamento esterno della Serenata op. 8 per flauto, violino e viola. \u00c8 stato probabilmente realizzato da Franz Xaver Kleinheinz (1765-1832), che lavorava come insegnante di pianoforte a Vienna all'inizio del XIX secolo. Secondo le convenzioni dell'epoca, tuttavia, egli rimane senza nome sul frontespizio. In piccolo, tuttavia, \u00e8 presente l'aggiunta <em>\"rev\u00fbe par l'Auteur\"<\/em>su cui Beethoven insisteva anche in una lettera agli editori Hoffmeister &amp; K\u00fchnel del 20 settembre 1803: <em>\"le traduzioni non vengono da me, ma sono da me dur<\/em>ch<em>e sono stati completamente migliorati in alcuni punti, quindi non ditemi che state scrivendo che l'ho trascurato, perch\u00e9 altrimenti state mentendo e non avrei il tempo o la pazienza di farlo\". <\/em><\/p>\n<p>L'arrangiamento, apparso all'inizio del 1804 come opus 42 indipendente, \u00e8 certamente interessante. La tessitura originale \u00e8 stata trasferita al pianoforte; la viola, pur avendo una parte indipendente, non funge da strumento melodico principale (anche in considerazione del suo registro medio).
