Al di l\u00e0 dell'alta stima artistica, tuttavia, ognuno dei due nutriva delle riserve nei confronti dell'altro. Goethe scrisse nel suo diario il 21 luglio 1812: <em>\"La sera da Beethoven. Ha suonato in modo delizioso\".<\/em>ma poi lo spieg\u00f2 qualche settimana dopo in una lettera a Carl Friedrich Zelter: <em>\"Il suo talento mi ha stupito; ma purtroppo si tratta di una personalit\u00e0 completamente sfrenata, che non ha affatto torto nel trovare il mondo detestabile, ma che di certo non lo rende pi\u00f9 piacevole per s\u00e9 o per gli altri. D'altra parte, \u00e8 molto scusabile e molto deplorevole, perch\u00e9 ha perso il senso dell'udito, il che forse danneggia meno la parte musicale della sua natura che quella socievole. Lui, che \u00e8 gi\u00e0 di natura laconica, ora lo \u00e8 doppiamente per questo difetto\".<\/em> Anche Beethoven, che nel 1811 scrisse a Goethe della sua tragedia <em>Egmont<\/em> entusiasta, ha espresso il suo disappunto in una lettera all'editore Breitkopf &amp; H\u00e4rtel dopo l'incontro: <em>\"A G\u00f6the l'aria di corte piace troppo pi\u00f9 di quanto si addica a un poeta, Non \u00e8 piuttosto il caso di parlare della ridicolaggine dei virtuosi di qui, quando i poeti, che dovrebbero essere considerati i primi maestri della nazione, possono dimenticare tutto il resto al di sopra di questo barlume -\".<\/em><\/p>\n<p>L'incontro rimase quindi senza conseguenze. Il giovane Mendelssohn riferisce ancora nel 1830 la completa reticenza di Goethe: <em>\"Non voleva avvicinarsi a Beethoven\".<\/em> La richiesta di Beethoven (datata 8 febbraio 1823) che la corte di Weimar inviasse una copia del suo <em>Missa solemnis<\/em> sottoscrizione, rimase senza successo. Pare che Goethe non abbia risposto nemmeno alla dedica di <em>Silenzio marino e buon viaggio<\/em>. Beethoven aveva aggiunto nella stessa lettera: <em>\"Entrambi<\/em> Poesie <em>mi \u00e8 sembrato, a causa del loro contrasto, molto adatto per poterlo comunicare attraverso la musica, quanto mi sarebbe caro sapere se ho combinato adeguatamente la mia armonia con la vostra, anche considerare l'istruzione come verit\u00e0, per cos\u00ec dire, sarebbe estremamente gradito a me, perch\u00e9 amo quest'ultima sopra tutte le cose<\/em> ...<em>.\"<\/em> - Omise di dire che la partitura era gi\u00e0 stata completata otto anni prima ed eseguita per la prima volta in pubblico il 25 dicembre 1815.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c8 una fortuna che tali incompatibilit\u00e0 personali non debbano necessariamente riflettersi nelle arti.
