Quando il vecchio teatro Josefstadt di Vienna divenne troppo piccolo all'inizio del XIX secolo, fu addirittura demolito e sostituito da un nuovo edificio, che esiste ancora oggi ed \u00e8 stato successivamente ampliato, nel 1822. Per la cerimonia di inaugurazione del 3 ottobre 1822, Carl Meisl (1773-1853) cre\u00f2 un'opera teatrale descritta nel titolo della stampa successiva come \"pezzo occasionale\", a cui Beethoven aggiunse singoli numeri dalla sua musica per <em>Le rovine di Atene<\/em> op. 113 (1811) e aggiunse una nuova ouverture su richiesta del regista teatrale Karl Friedrich Hensler (1759-1825). Diresse anche la prima esecuzione - non si sa se la diresse davvero, secondo un resoconto del Leipziger <em>Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung<\/em> Tuttavia, \u00e8 rimasto aperto: <em>\"Il maestro si \u00e8 comportato da solo; tuttavia, poich\u00e9 non ci si pu\u00f2 fidare dei suoi strumenti uditivi, purtroppo ancora indeboliti, il signor Kapellmeister gli \u00e8 stato alle spalle.<\/em> Francesco Giuseppe <em>Occhiali <\/em>1798-1861 <em>per tradurre effettivamente la volont\u00e0 dell'autore all'orchestra, anch'essa di nuova organizzazione, la cui doppia tattica, spesso molto diversa, si \u00e8 rivelata in realt\u00e0 molto particolare. Ciononostante, tutto si svolse felicemente\".<\/em><\/p>\n<p>L'ouverture fu eseguita anche all'inaugurazione del K\u00f6nigst\u00e4dter Theater di Berlino il 4 agosto 1824; Carl Wilhelm Henning ne aveva acquistato una copia da Beethoven durante una visita a Vienna. La composizione, che si confronta musicalmente con Handel, sembra essere stata realizzata per queste occasioni. Tuttavia, deve esserci stato un malinteso: Mentre Beethoven pensava che sarebbe stata eseguita, Henning credeva di aver acquisito l'opera nella sua interezza e pubblic\u00f2 una riduzione per pianoforte a quattro mani alla fine del 1824. Beethoven reag\u00ec con rabbia e sfog\u00f2 il suo disappunto su una copia etichettandola come \"mutilata\". Quando Berlino non accolse la richiesta di interrompere la vendita di questa edizione, Beethoven e il suo editore originale passarono all'offensiva con una correzione intitolata \"Avvertimento\", che fu pubblicata pi\u00f9 volte: <em>\"Ritengo mio dovere mettere in guardia il pubblico musicale da una riduzione pianistica completamente errata. B., tanto pi\u00f9 che le riduzioni pianistiche a 2 e 4 mani, scritte dal signor Carl Czerny e del tutto fedeli alla partitura, saranno presto pubblicate nell'unica edizione legittima da B. Schotts S\u00f6hne, Grossherzogl. Hofmusikhandlung di Mainz\".<\/em> - Un processo ancora oggi notevole, che evidenzia anche la straordinaria qualit\u00e0 della composizione.
