Adolf Bernhard Marx aveva gi\u00e0 intitolato il capitolo corrispondente della sua biografia di Beethoven del 1859 \"Addio al pianoforte\". Thomas Mann si \u00e8 riferito a Beethoven nella sua <em>Il dottor Faustus <\/em>ma diagnosticato, secondo Theodor W. Adorno e pi\u00f9 preciso nei fatti, un \"addio alla sonata\" in un duplice senso - cio\u00e8 in Beethoven stesso, ma anche nei confronti del genere, che non poteva pi\u00f9 realmente affermarsi sul mercato. Nel 1839, Robert Schumann osservava con sguardo rattristato la sonata per pianoforte: <em>\"Il pubblico \u00e8 difficile da comprare, l'editore \u00e8 difficile da stampare e i compositori sono scoraggiati da ogni sorta di ragioni, forse anche interne, dallo scrivere opere cos\u00ec antiquate\". <\/em><\/p>\n<p>La situazione \u00e8 certamente pi\u00f9 complicata (come spesso accade), soprattutto perch\u00e9 l'\"addio\" di Beethoven fu un processo lungo e per nulla semplice. Ad esempio, l'ultimo concerto per pianoforte e orchestra (op. 73) fu composto nel 1810, l'ultimo trio per pianoforte e orchestra (op. 97) l'anno successivo. D'altra parte, il <em>Variazioni di Diabelli<\/em> (op. 120) \u00e8 stata completata solo dopo la Sonata op. 111, cos\u00ec come la Sonata op. 111, a volte piuttosto sperimentale. <em>Bagatelle <\/em>op. 126, quindi cosa dobbiamo fare delle caratterizzazioni che vedono la sonata come \"testamento\", come \"profonda musica delle sfere\", come \"spiritualizzazione finale, dissoluzione nello spazio\" o come \"preludio al silenzio\"? Non possono essere riferite specificamente a Beethoven o a una fonte contemporanea. Tuttavia, offrono l'opportunit\u00e0 di esprimere a parole le proprie sensazioni sulla musica, di rivelare pi\u00f9 cose sul linguaggio e sull'espressione musicale di quanto possa fare una descrizione puramente tecnica e analitica.<\/p>\n<p>In realt\u00e0, le interpretazioni di stampo poetico non si riferiscono tanto al primo movimento, con la sua idea principale davvero tempestosa e polifonica.
