Fu a Troppau (Opava) in Moravia, quando lasci\u00f2 il castello di Gr\u00e4tz in fretta e furia dopo un litigio con il principe Lichnowsky che aveva minato il suo orgoglio? Almeno questo \u00e8 quanto riporta Theodor von Frimmel, facendo riferimento a un presunto ricordo del medico Anton Weiser, che era presente alla cena. Oppure l'acqua si \u00e8 semplicemente infiltrata in una borsa da viaggio durante il successivo viaggio verso Vienna, come not\u00f2 Paul Bigot de Morogues, un tempo bibliotecario del principe Rasumowsky, su un'edizione stampata dell'opera molti anni dopo? In quest'ultimo caso, si dice che Beethoven abbia <em>\"ridendo del suo lavoro ancora molto bagnato\".<\/em> alla pianista Marie Bigot, che poi suon\u00f2 a vista la composizione intrisa. Nell'altro caso, la sonata (e quindi anche la sua espressione musicale) fa parte di una scena in cui si scontrano l'arroganza aristocratica e la sicurezza artistica. Non \u00e8 certo che Beethoven abbia scritto una lettera da Troppau il giorno seguente al principe, che fino ad allora era stato il suo mecenate. Tuttavia, la seguente dichiarazione, che apparentemente \u00e8 sopravvissuta solo nello spirito, riflette perfettamente l'insormontabile discrepanza tra status e talento (simile all'aneddoto su Mozart e Giuseppe II, sempre del XIX secolo): <em>\"Principe! Ci\u00f2 che tu sei, lo sei per caso e per nascita, ci\u00f2 che io sono, lo sono da solo. Ci sono stati e ci saranno migliaia di principi, ma c'\u00e8 un solo Beethoven\".<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In questo contesto, l'appellativo di \"Appassionata\" non potrebbe essere pi\u00f9 azzeccato per la Sonata in fa minore op. 57: i caratteri dei due movimenti esterni sono sempre appassionati e tempestosi. In particolare nel movimento d'apertura, il tema appena formulato scuote la forma esterna con la sua urgenza impulsiva, e le cascate virtuosistiche del finale attraversano l'ambitus verso la fine. Forse perch\u00e9 Beethoven mantenne le indicazioni di tempo abbastanza neutre (Allegro assai, Andante con moto e Allegro ma non troppo), l'opera non fu particolarmente apprezzata dal pubblico all'inizio. Come spesso accade, ci\u00f2 richiese un'aggiunta postuma: la denominazione \"Sonata appassionata\" apparve per la prima volta sul frontespizio di un arrangiamento per quattro mani (!) pubblicato da Cranz ad Amburgo nel 1838 e fu presto accolta con favore da altri editori.
