L'ispirazione per questa composizione davvero monumentale gli venne all'inizio del 1819, quando l'editore musicale e compositore viennese Anton Diabelli (1781-1858) si rivolse a tutta una serie di compositori e pianisti che lavoravano in Austria chiedendo loro di contribuire a un'opera comune. <em>uno<\/em> variazione su un valzer che aveva progettato a questo scopo. Anche Beethoven deve aver ricevuto questo invito; tuttavia, la sua immaginazione creativa, e presumibilmente anche la sua ambizione compositiva, fu talmente stimolata dal tema dato che un gran numero di variazioni fu abbozzato gi\u00e0 dopo pochi mesi. Impegnato a completare altre opere, Beethoven le lasci\u00f2 in sospeso per quasi quattro anni; solo nell'aprile del 1823 complet\u00f2 finalmente l'autografo. Ciononostante, riusc\u00ec a raggiungere Diabelli e il suo progetto originale: Il <em>33 Modifiche<\/em> op. 120 apparve a stampa nel giugno del 1823; l'opera comune composta da 50 variazioni, invece, apparve solo un anno dopo con il titolo di <em>Vaterl\u00e4ndischer K\u00fcnstlerverein. Variazioni per pianoforte su un tema presentato.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A differenza di questa singolare stampa collettiva, in cui i singoli contributi sono organizzati in ordine alfabetico secondo i nomi dei compositori come in un'enciclopedia, Beethoven bas\u00f2 la sua composizione su una disposizione complessiva ben calcolata, creando cos\u00ec non solo una serie di variazioni, ma un ciclo autonomo. La complessit\u00e0 della sua struttura \u00e8 dimostrata dalla variet\u00e0 di arrangiamenti possibili. Visto dall'esterno, il ciclo appare come una sequenza quasi simmetrica di gruppi di quattro variazioni ciascuno (ad eccezione dell'ultima, la n. 33). A seconda dei parametri o degli aspetti, tuttavia, sono possibili anche altre classificazioni che vanno ben oltre i modelli standardizzati dell'epoca. Gi\u00e0 nella prima variazione Beethoven opera una rottura con il tema: \u00e8 intitolato <em>alla Marcia maestoso<\/em> garantisce in modo decisivo una giusta distanza. Nel prosieguo dell'opera, spesso sono solo singoli motivi, progressioni armoniche o elementi ritmici e melodici a rendere udibile il richiamo. L'energia accumulata si libera infine in una pesante doppia fuga in cui Beethoven abbandona per la prima volta la cornice tonale di do maggiore (e la variante di do minore).
