Beethoven, un po' infastidito da ci\u00f2, annot\u00f2 sulla copia dell'incisore: \"<em>rubati insieme da varie cose.<\/em>\"Preoccupato di essere preso in parola, poco pi\u00f9 tardi ha risposto con una lettera chiarificatrice: \"<em>Hanno scritto che doveva essere un quartetto originale, per me era delicato, cos\u00ec per scherzo ho scritto accanto all'iscrizione che \u00e8 stato indossato insieme. Sotto \u00e8 nuovo di zecca.<\/em>\"<\/p>\n<p>A parte l'arguzia linguistica e la sottile scelta di parole di questa osservazione, essa si riferisce a un'opera nuova sotto diversi aspetti: con un totale di sette movimenti (Beethoven, tuttavia, parlava di \"<em>Pezzi<\/em>\"), quattro dei quali possono essere combinati per formare due coppie, la composizione avanza gi\u00e0 in superficie verso nuove dimensioni. Ma anche i caratteri dei singoli movimenti puntano ben oltre l'orizzonte contemporaneo e al XX secolo: il fugato malinconico del primo movimento, il secondo sottilmente circolare, il terzo simile a un recitativo, che conduce alle variazioni centrali, il Presto sfacciato e il breve ed elegiaco sesto movimento, che precede il finale spigoloso e soggettivo. Anche se Beethoven non vide mai un'esecuzione pubblica dell'opera, pretese un'esecuzione quasi senza pause. Karl Holz, il violoncellista del Quartetto Schuppanzigh, chiese in un libretto di conversazione alla fine di agosto del 1826: \"<em>Deve essere giocato fino in fondo senza fermarsi? - Ma cos\u00ec non possiamo ripetere nulla! - Quando dobbiamo votare?<\/em> ... <em>Ordineremo corde affidabili.<\/em>\"\u00c8 facile immaginare le risposte corrispondenti.<\/p>\n<p>Se ci fidiamo delle memorie di Holz, registrate in seguito da una terza persona, questo quartetto d'archi fu anche l'ultima musica ascoltata da Franz Schubert. Si dice che sia stato eseguito privatamente pochi giorni prima della sua morte; Schubert potrebbe anche aver suonato lui stesso la parte della viola. Ludwig Nohl riferisce a questo proposito: \"<em>Il signor Holz, Karl Gro\u00df e il barone K\u00f6nig la suonarono per lui; era presente solo Doleschalek, l'insegnante di pianoforte. Schubert rimase cos\u00ec estasiato ed entusiasta che tutti temevano per lui. Una leggera indisposizione, che aveva preceduto e non era ancora stata curata a fondo, aument\u00f2 enormemente, si trasform\u00f2 in febbre tifoidea e Schubert mor\u00ec dopo cinque giorni.<\/em>\" (<em>Beethoven, Liszt, Wagner.
