Le ragioni sono estremamente varie e vanno dal loro frequente utilizzo in occasioni ufficiali, alla radio, al cinema e alla televisione, fino a tradizioni talvolta non proprio locali. Perch\u00e9, mano sul cuore, chi non ha mai sentito un'esecuzione pi\u00f9 o meno festosa della Nona di Beethoven a San Silvestro o a Capodanno, al termine della quale il canto sembra eclissare tutto ci\u00f2 che \u00e8 sinfonico? Almeno in questo momento sublime, \u00e8 come se - a dispetto di molte esperienze quotidiane - tutti gli uomini fossero davvero fratelli. Inoltre, questo \"Inno alla gioia\" non \u00e8 mai stato un cattivo sostituto quando nessun inno nazionale era disponibile o sarebbe stato adatto (ad esempio in Rhodesia, in Kosovo o in occasione dell'ingresso di squadre interamente tedesche ai Giochi Olimpici). In tutti questi casi, tuttavia, i versi visionari di Friedrich Schiller non sono stati cantati, forse nemmeno presi in considerazione. Lo stesso vale (purtroppo) per il suo uso ufficiale come inno europeo (dal 1985). <em>senza parole<\/em> arrangiato da Herbert von Karajan nelle versioni per pianoforte, orchestra di fiati o orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>Gli arrangiamenti non mancavano nemmeno nel XIX secolo. Anche allora, la questione cruciale era come trattare il testo e le parti vocali. La trascrizione virtuosa per pianoforte a due mani di Franz Liszt (1853), ad esempio, divenne una riduzione per pianoforte nel finale. Anni prima, Carl Czerny aveva gi\u00e0 avuto delle riserve su una simile esecuzione in occasione del suo arrangiamento per pianoforte a quattro mani: Dove avrebbero dovuto essere inserite le parti vocali, dal momento che (come si usa ancora oggi) ai due esecutori sono assegnate le pagine sinistra e destra dell'edizione aperta? Cos\u00ec l'editore Probst di Lipsia pubblic\u00f2 finalmente un volume per pianoforte in formato orizzontale, mentre le parti vocali furono allegate separatamente in formato verticale.
