Suo padre era violinista e gambista. Quest'ultimo strumento fu decisivo per la carriera del figlio. Dopo un ingaggio alla corte di Dresda, le vicende di Abel dal 1755 in poi non sono chiare. Probabilmente lasci\u00f2 la Sassonia a causa delle turbolenze della Guerra dei Sette Anni e viaggi\u00f2 attraverso la Francia fino a Londra, dove riscosse grande successo come virtuoso della viola da gamba a partire dal 1759. Insieme al figlio minore di Johann Sebastian Bach, Johann Christian, fond\u00f2 i concerti di successo Bach Abel. Nel 1782 soggiorn\u00f2 per un lungo periodo alla corte reale di Potsdam. Il principe ereditario Federico Guglielmo, nipote di Federico il Grande, era, come lo zio, un appassionato di musica, suonava lui stesso il violoncello ed era allievo, tra gli altri, di Jean-Pierre Duport. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart compose per lui i Quartetti per archi prussiani KV 575, 589 e 590.<\/p>\n<p>Abel probabilmente scrisse il Concerto per violoncello n. 2 in do maggiore, composto nel 1782, in tre movimenti e della durata di circa 20 minuti, per Friedrich Wilhelm. Tuttavia, non ci sono prove di una sua esecuzione. Con due oboi, due corni e archi, l'orchestrazione corrisponde interamente al modello classico. Il primo movimento (Allegro maestoso) \u00e8 il pi\u00f9 convenzionale in termini di struttura (forma sonata). Al contrario, il secondo e il terzo movimento riservano sorprese: nell'Adagio ma non troppo (Fa maggiore), il compositore ottiene un effetto sonoro sorprendente con l'uso solitario dei corni. Del terzo movimento sono sopravvissute due versioni diverse. Un Allegro in tempo 6\/8 \u00e8 stato sostituito da un Rondeau - Tempo di Minuetto. Ci\u00f2 \u00e8 forse dovuto al gusto un po' conservatore della corte berlinese. Inoltre, due delle cadenze originali di Abel si sono conservate manoscritte.<\/p>\n<p>Il secondo concerto per violoncello di Abel non ha nulla da invidiare alle opere pi\u00f9 conosciute di Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Joseph Haydn o Luigi Boccherini e pu\u00f2 essere considerato un significativo arricchimento della letteratura classica per violoncello. Con un'estensione che va dal do al sol2, Abel sfrutta abilmente le possibilit\u00e0 dello strumento e offre agli interpreti una ricca tavolozza di espressioni virtuosistiche e liriche.<\/p>\n<p>Bruno Delepelaire, violoncellista principale dei Berliner Philharmoniker, ha magistralmente registrato quest'opera con i Solisti Barocchi di Berlino sull'etichetta H\u00e4nssler classic. \u00c8 molto piacevole che si possano ascoltare entrambe le versioni del terzo movimento. L'edizione degli spartiti, curata da Markus M\u00f6llenbeck, contiene una dettagliata prefazione sulla storia della composizione del concerto, oltre a pratiche note esecutive.
