Michael Walter interpreta l'istituzione come qualcosa di pi\u00f9 di un semplice luogo in cui si pu\u00f2 assistere a un'opera. Egli esamina anche aspetti che di solito non sono al centro dell'attenzione: ad esempio, la situazione dei cantanti dal XVII al XXI secolo, la composizione storica e contemporanea del pubblico, il sistema degli impresari o delle sovvenzioni o il ruolo che l'opera svolge nella competizione tra citt\u00e0.<\/p>\n<p>Una visione cos\u00ec ampia \u00e8 sia una benedizione che una maledizione. Walter ha una visione sobria e concreta delle cose. Gli approfondimenti sulle condizioni del campione nel XVIII secolo sono particolarmente emozionanti e talvolta divertenti da leggere. \"Il tempo \u00e8 denaro\" era gi\u00e0 il motto di allora. Se un'opera pi\u00f9 impegnativa richiedeva una preparazione troppo lunga, poteva accadere che venisse rappresentata un'opera comica invece di un'opera seria. I vantaggi di questa scelta: Snellire il calendario delle prove e, soprattutto, avere un teatro pi\u00f9 pieno pi\u00f9 a lungo. Secondo Walter, il denaro \u00e8 spesso una spiegazione conclusiva per le questioni istituzionali. Le dive dell'opera e i tenori eroici facevano salire i prezzi dei biglietti gi\u00e0 nel XVIII e XIX secolo. Walter ha condotto una ricerca meticolosa sulle tariffe e pu\u00f2 fornire cifre concrete. Presso i principali teatri d'opera, come l'Opera di Corte di Vienna o di Berlino, il Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo di Venezia o la Royal Academy of Music di Londra, i castrati e i cantanti di punta guadagnavano talvolta 2000-7000 Reichstaler, una somma formidabile per gli standard dell'epoca. Oggi, sia i teatri d'opera che i cantanti sono poco interessati alla trasparenza per paura delle (giustificate) critiche del pubblico. Tuttavia, Walter cita il tenore Roberto Alagna, che una volta parl\u00f2 di una somma di 13.000 euro a spettacolo. Non si tratta certo di una somma esigua. Ma nemmeno lontanamente paragonabile ai 500.000 euro che Luciano Pavarotti chiedeva e riceveva per esibizioni eroiche negli stadi di calcio. (Fortunatamente, Walter sfata il pregiudizio che la migliore performance valga il pi\u00f9 alto stipendio).<\/p>\n<p>La maledizione dell'ampia visuale: <em>Opera: la storia di un'istituzione<\/em> non \u00e8 un piacere da leggere. Nell'evidente tentativo di raggiungere una completezza cronologica e locale, l'autore salta da un aspetto all'altro in modo molto frammentario. Walter presenta i suoi capitoli con i titoli \"Cantanti\", \"Questioni legali\" o \"Pubblico dell'opera\". Di conseguenza, \u00e8 costretto a cambiare frequentemente argomento fin dall'inizio, per cui rimane dubbio se le condizioni dell'opera americana possano essere paragonate a quelle russe o europee.
