Gi\u00e0 durante il periodo in cui studiava a Londra, una struttura chiara e il riferimento a schemi formali ben definiti si sono sviluppati come caratteristiche delle sue composizioni, che spaziano da pezzi solistici a opere corali e teatrali. Il primo movimento, il Preludio, ricorda i movimenti delle suite di Bach, in particolare l'Allemande dalla <em>Partita<\/em> La minore BWC 1013 per flauto solo. Inizia con un sol, che ricorre regolarmente all'inizio delle battute e da cui si dipartono gli sviluppi armonici. Il compositore sottolinea nella prefazione che la sfida per ogni esecutore \u00e8 quella di \"rendere udibile la polifonia immanente che permea tutti i movimenti e anche di dissolvere il rigore della forma nell'emotivit\u00e0 e nel virtuosismo dell'esecuzione\".<\/p>\n<p>Le strutture polifoniche sono evidenti anche nel successivo Valzer viennese, che incorpora un passaggio libero, simile a una cadenza preludente, solo nella sezione finale. Anche il Tango si rif\u00e0 al preludio iniziale, cos\u00ec come il Calipso, che gli \u00e8 simile e diventa molto virtuosistico attraverso movimenti di terzine cromatiche. Nel Valzer lento vengono utilizzate per la prima volta tecniche esecutive contemporanee come gli armonici. Il pezzo di gran lunga pi\u00f9 lungo \u00e8 la variazione cinque, Blues, Rock and Roll (Passacaglia), che \u00e8 un riuscito mix di spinta ritmica moderna ed echi neoclassici con polifonia e ornamenti con trilli rimbalzanti.<\/p>\n<p>Il compositore fornisce istruzioni specifiche per l'esecuzione: tutti i movimenti o i primi quattro nell'ordine originale o solo la passacaglia. Questo permette agli esecutori una maggiore flessibilit\u00e0 nella scelta.
