Il trattamento fino ad allora inusuale degli strumenti ad arco - Ravel si faceva consigliare dagli esecutori su quali fossero le tecniche esecutive possibili per il violino e il violoncello - e la \"oggettivazione\" e \"de-romantizzazione\" del linguaggio tonale segnarono una svolta nell'opera del compositore. Egli stesso descrisse questa sonata come \"una macchina per due strumenti\". Nelle sue memorie, H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Jourdan-Morhange, violinista alla prima, riferisce del meticoloso lavoro con il compositore e dice: \"Il duo, che al primo incontro ebbe un effetto quasi repellente, nasconde dei tesori, ma tratta il violino molto duramente\".<\/p>\n<p>Oggi il duo di Ravel \u00e8 uno dei pilastri del repertorio per questa strumentazione, anche se pone esigenze elevate agli esecutori. Da tempo ci siamo abituati alle \"asprezze\" e persino ampie parti di questa sonata sono estremamente liriche! Oltre all'edizione tradizionale di Durand &amp; Co, Parigi, B\u00e4renreiter offre ora una nuova edizione Urtext dell'opera. Le fonti utilizzate sono elencate nella prefazione e nell'appendice e alcune sono persino riprodotte come facsimili dell'autografo; anche le descrizioni di Jourdan-Morhange sono citate in dettaglio. La presentazione come partitura di grande formato (il violoncello pu\u00f2 leggere anche il primo movimento \"monofonico\", se lo desidera) e l'ingegnosa impaginazione, che permette di suonare senza interruzioni, sono estremamente utili per l'esecuzione.
