Il compito era quello di scrivere un pezzo per pianoforte solo con riferimento alle sinfonie di Beethoven. Hefti prese il tema del movimento lento della Settima Sinfonia come punto di partenza per il suo pezzo.<\/p>\n<p>\"In questo brano pianistico i mezzi compositivi sono stati ridotti al punto da rinunciare alle tecniche esecutive estese all'interno del pianoforte a coda.... Utilizzando tutti e tre i pedali e vari effetti di pedale, si ottiene comunque una tavolozza di colori tonali a pi\u00f9 livelli. Inoltre, si crea un campo di tensione tra passaggi liberi e precisamente annotati, cos\u00ec come tra attacchi taglienti e toni di eco delicatamente risonanti, che ancora e ancora danno un'idea della musica di Beethoven in forma sonora diffusa\". Questa descrizione precisa e molto accurata proviene dal compositore stesso. In realt\u00e0, le citazioni beethoveniane sono percepibili solo superficialmente in pochi punti. Molto pi\u00f9 dominanti sono le risonanze, che danno al brano un \"doppio fondo\" con l'aiuto del frequente pedale di sostegno.<\/p>\n<p>Il risultato \u00e8 una composizione sofisticata che pu\u00f2 esistere anche indipendentemente dal soggetto di Beethoven, come una <em>Pezzo per pianoforte n. 2<\/em>.
